“João Nicolau de Almeida was one of the people responsible for this Moscatel,” he begins by explaining. “It was he who had the idea of experimenting with Armagnac and Cognac brandies to fortify the wine, but up there (i.e., in Port wine) he couldn't do it, and down here we could.” The two friends exchanged ideas and Domingos agreed to do the test “on one condition: his name would always be mentioned when we presented a wine with these characteristics.” This is how the Coleção Privada Domingos Soares Franco D.O.C. Moscatel De Setúbal Armagnac or Cognac was born, but in 1998 Domingos decided to fortify a batch using both brandies in equal parts. This batch has been stored in the JMF cellars to this day, to serve, appropriately, as the star of his farewell. It is a very smooth Moscatel, with a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, well-rounded.
